Ecoegg- A laundry solution that is kinder to your family, purse & the environment!
Reading the labels of the laundry products on the supermarket shelves can be a bit of a minefield. By law, suppliers are not obliged to mention a lot on the packaging so labels can be a bit deceptive. As a general rule, look for chemical additives in the labelling. An example of which is 1,4-Dioxane. Short term inhalation exposure to high levels of 1,4-dioxane has caused vertigo, drowsiness, headache, anorexia and irritation of the eyes, nose, throat, and lungs in humans. It may also irritate the skin. It also does not biodegrade easily.
Most laundry products will contain surfactants as these are essential for clean clothes. Eco-friendly laundry brands will use a plant based surfactant such as ‘Fatty Acids Methyl Esters Ethoxylates’ (FAMEE), which is derived from rapeseed oil but other non eco-friendly brands will use surfactants such as Linear Alkylbenzene Sulfonate (LAS). Again, this does not readily biodegrade and is a known environmental polluter due to its toxicity.
Phosphates are another red-flag ingredient, and probably the one that most of us have heard of. Whilst the dosage of this ingredient in washing powder may be small, it can still cause pollution in our waterways that results in the death of our marine life. Too much exposure to phosphates can also cause health problems in humans, such as kidney damage and osteoporosis, however, some big name brand still use it. Environmentally friendly products should use alternatives to phosphorus such as citric acid.
At The Eco Friendly Living Co, we are proud to be a stockist of the Ecoegg Laundry Egg, a unique and innovative laundry washing system that cleans clothes effectively, using two types of natural mineral pellets encased in a recyclable egg.
The mineral pellets work together in the water to effectively draw dirt from your clothing fibres and soften your clothes by changing the pH, leaving your laundry clean and fresh without using harmful chemical laden detergents. The mineral pellets in the Ecoegg Laundry Egg are perfect for people with sensitive skin, are non-biological and do not contain any petrochemicals, enzymes, bleaches, phosphates, parabens, SLS/SLES, palm oil or microplastics. You’ll need to replace your mineral pellets after approximately 2 months of use or 70 washes.
‘The Ecoegg has been rated as ‘eggcellent’ (see what I did there) by Allergy UK’s panel of advisors as suitable for people with sensitive skin conditions as it contains no harmful chemicals and very low levels of fragrance. However, it’s not just for those with sensitive skin, it’s for everyone!
To put it simply I love the Ecoegg! It’s up there with one of my favourite eco-friendly product swaps so far. It’s not only kinder to your skin, but it will save you money whilst also reducing your single-use plastic consumption- WIN WIN!
- It contains no harmful chemicals so its kind to your skin.
- No single use plastic: The ecoegg Laundry Egg helps to reduce your plastic use as you can use it for around 70 washes with the minerals it comes with. Then all you have to do is buy the Refill Laundry Egg Pellets which allow you to use the egg over and over again.
- SAVE UPTO 40 BOTTLES OF PLASTIC EACH YEAR!!! If you switch from liquid detergent and fabric conditioner to a Laundry Egg it will stop 40 plastic bottles ending up in landfill. (Figures based on 7 washes a week and 18 wash bottles.)
- It will also save you £££ as it works out at about 14p per wash.
- Vegan & cruelty free. The Ecoegg is made without any testing or cruelty to animals, and is made without any animal derivatives.
How To Use
Simply open your Laundry Egg and fill the larger half of the egg with the two types of mineral pellets. Close your egg so that it ‘clicks’ and place it in your washing machine on top of your laundry.
